A technology hub based in Yangon, Phandeeyar brings together civil society, independent media, and technologists to foster technology talent, increase the strategic use of information technology, and create a collaborative technology community. Phandeeyar will be locally managed and sustained. It is initially managed by Internews, a nonprofit that has been training and empowering the country’s journalists and advocating for open Internet in Myanmar for more than a decade.
Phandeeyar partners with technology experts and the media to encourage the integration of technology in their work. The hub offers education and training workshops, seminars, meet-ups, and other special events such as hack-a-thons and app competitions. As mobile and Internet penetration increases in Myanmar, Phandeeyar aims to maximize the potential of these enabling technologies to accelerate the nation’s socio-economic development. Internews demonstrated high demand for Phandeeyar through its Code 4 Change initiative that hosted two hackathons in 2014, attracting emerging talent in the Myanmar technology community to use their skills to help tackle some of the country’s pressing problems.
