  • Omidyar Network statements in support of California bills: SB 53 & AB 940

    Sep 12, 2025

REDWOOD CITY, CA – Omidyar Network, a California-born philanthropic and investment organization dedicated to centering humanity in our digital future, today released additional statements in support of pending legislation in California. This follows on the organization’s endorsement last month of a slate of bills focused on accountability, data privacy, antitrust enforcement, and fair labor standards in the age of AI.

“After two years of thoughtful work, California is once again proving that smart guardrails don’t stifle innovation—they accelerate it,” said Omidyar Network CEO Mike Kubzansky. “SB 53’s combination of CalCompute public resources, whistleblower protections, and transparency requirements shows how we can democratize AI access while keeping the public interest front and center, providing the regulatory clarity that companies and investors have been seeking. This sets a model for the nation to follow.”

“California has the talent and ecosystem to lead the quantum revolution,” said Omidyar Network President Michele Jawando. “Omidyar Network supports AB 940 and applauds the integration of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development, under whose leadership California will be able to capitalize on the generational opportunity to create high-quality jobs and economic growth while advancing scientific breakthroughs that can benefit not just the state, but humanity as a whole.”
