Vox: The Great Rebuild – Press Release

“The great rebuild” launched today on Vox with a special four-part podcast series from The Ezra Klein Show, focusing on the dramatic steps the US government could take to save the American economy—and remake it to be more inclusive of all Americans. Over the course of four episodes, Ezra Klein will speak with leading experts about the long-standing systemic inequities and endemic weaknesses in the economy that could be improved, transformed or eliminated during this pivotal point in our country’s history. With a war-like mobilization of government resources, this series argues, we can both save the US economy from the worst ravages of coronavirus while also building a more just, stable society.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is the biggest policy failure of my lifetime, and rebuilding from it will demand creative, ambitious, solutions at a scale American politics rarely contemplates,” said Ezra Klein, Vox founder and editor-at-large, and author of Why We’re Polarized. “This series is about trying to trace those solutions: the values that should guide us as we rebuild from the wreckage, the purposes our economy is meant to serve, and the injustices and inequities we finally have a chance to correct.”

“As we navigate through this current crisis, the decisions made in the coming months will set the economic and social course of America and the world for decades to come,” said Beth Kanter, Chief Advocacy and Strategic Communications Officer at Omidyar Network. “Now is not the time for half measures. Big ideas and bold actions are critical, and this series is designed to explain the power of policy, and how real and lasting change is possible. ”

Next month, Vox will publish a special issue of The Highlight, its premium editorial product, featuring a series of stories illuminating how we might mobilize underemployed graduates sidelined by the pandemic; exploring childcare policies in light of the crisis; and addressing housing shortages and related systemic racism. With a cover story by Zach Carter, HuffPost writer and author of The Price of Peace: Money, Democracy and the Life of John Maynard Keynes; a piece from entrepreneur, nonprofit founder, and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang; and reporting by Vox writers Anna North, Emily Stewart, and Matt Yglesias among others, the issue will surface these pervasive issues and the structural deficiencies fueling them, shedding light on the need for mobilization across industries, governmental agencies and segments of the population.
