Co-founded by Bono and strictly nonpartisan, ONE raises public awareness and presses political leaders to combat AIDS and preventable diseases, increase investments in agriculture and nutrition, and demand greater transparency in poverty-fighting programs.
As part of these efforts, ONE has contributed to the next phase of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by piloting a project to give citizens a voice in choosing the changes that would make the most difference to their lives. For the past 12 years, the MDGs have played a critical role in shaping policy, guiding political agendas, and channeling funds around the world. As the international community determines what comes next when the current MDGs expire in 2015, ONE is using SMS and Web-based technologies to engage African citizens in the conversation.
Traditional advocacy will complement this grassroots effort to ensure that the open government principles of transparency, citizen participation and accountability are reflected in the final framework.
