National Foundation for India (NFI) seeks to create a just and equitable society by enabling marginalized communities to improve the quality of their own lives. Established in 1992, the nonprofit makes grants to civil society organizations working toward poverty alleviation primarily in the central-eastern and northeastern Indian states.
In service of its mission, NFI prioritizes seven initiative areas designed to build the capacities of individuals, communities, and civil society. This is done through grants, individual fellowships and by providing technical support to small and medium sized voluntary organizations to address development challenges and concerns in an effort to make a difference and enhance the quality of life of ordinary citizens. .
Omidyar Network’s support is focused on NFI’s work to improve transparency and participation in India’s public budgeting process through supporting budget-focused groups, standard setting for state budget disclosure and expenditure, and research to improve expenditures in critical sectors and for marginalized populations.
