The Institute for Liberty and Democracy (ILD) works with developing countries to implement property and business rights reforms. Founded in 1981 by economist Hernando de Soto, ILD works toward a world in which all people have equal access to secure rights to their real property and business assets in order to pull themselves — and their countries — out of poverty.
As a leader in the property rights movement, ILD works closely with governments and assesses current legal systems. It provides expertise in the transition from customary control of assets to modern property and business rights. It also promotes institutional policy reforms that allow citizens to better leverage their assets.
With Omidyar Network’s support, ILD will expand to new countries and strengthen advocacy efforts. It will increase global awareness of the vital role of property and business rights in bringing life-altering benefits to poor and marginalized communities around the world.
