Global Witness conducts in-depth research into the natural resource business in developing countries in order to combat corruption, violence, and conflict surrounding land rights. Founded in 1993, the organization uses the evidence uncovered to drive awareness of these challenges and change the behavior of key stakeholders, particularly corporations.

The organization’s land campaign focuses on practical steps needed by governments and companies to make land deals fair and open. It helps to ensure that forests and the rights of farmers and Indigenous peoples are protected, and that small-scale agriculture production can thrive.

Global Witness’s ecosystem of stakeholders helps strengthen the capacity of nongovernmental and civil society organizations. It also spurs governments, corporations, and investors to commit to improved land-related social, environmental, and governance safeguards.

Omidyar Network funding for the land campaign in Myanmar will support more effective property rights policy and will help the organization to expand on its recent successes fighting land grabs by rubber corporations in Cambodia and Laos.
