The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is an independent, nonprofit organization that promotes press freedom worldwide by defending the rights of journalists to report the news without fear of reprisal.

Why We Invested

Across the world, journalists face repression and the risk of brutal treatment by authoritarian regimes and opponents of independent news. Founded in 1981, CPJ acts on behalf of imprisoned and exiled journalists, demands justice for journalists who have been harmed or killed, and advises journalists covering dangerous assignments to ensure their protection. Furthermore, CPJ exposes abuses against the press through rigorously researched articles, special reports, and Attacks on the Press—the most comprehensive annual survey of press freedom worldwide.

By supporting journalists to freely report news and shed light on vital issues affecting the public, CPJ empowers citizens with credible information to hold their governments to account, thus contributing to a healthy democracy and the growth of a robust civil society. With Omidyar Network’s support, CPJ will broaden its advocacy efforts and provide further assistance to at-risk journalists to advance press freedom around the world.
