What do people think about property rights?
By Peter Rabley
What do people really think about their property rights – the security of their home and work? Do they worry about being evicted from their home, or having their small business shut down, or being thrown off the land they farm? The fact is, we don’t know – so we decided to find out, by asking them.
That is the simple idea at the root of the Global Property Rights Index, published by Land Alliance with support from Omidyar Network. The new tool, first trialled in India, will eventually help us to find out what people around the world really think about the security of the homes, land, or businesses they rent or own.
At Omidyar Network, we believe that property rights are important, and we invest to protect them. Through the initial survey work carried out by Gallup in India, we discovered that between 1 in 4 and 1 in 5 people worry about losing the homes and land they own, and twice that many renters are concerned about their security. The main cause for concern is lack of documentation.
We launched PRIndex along with Gallup, UK Department for International Development, and Land Alliance in December 2016. Video of the event is available here. To learn more about the survey and the lessons it holds for policy makers, read more here.
